The smartphone market in India continues to be very vibrant. On one hand, smartphone makers and software companies are racing to leverage opportunities at the bottom (link). Even Indian tech giants like Reliance are positioning their services, like JioPhone as they explore Smartphone race to the bottom. On the other hand, the market for high-end smartphones from Apple and Samsung also continues to be strong.
Media accounts indicate that Blackberry (Nasdaq: BB) is planning to introduce a new high-end Android phone, code named ‘Ghost’ for the Indian market.

The writers are speculating that the “Ghost” is being designed/built by the Delhi-based telecom, Optiemus, following a licensing agreement announced early last year (link article in ET).
As per media accounts, Optiemus Infracom, which holds the rights for manufacturing and distribution of BlackBerry phones in India and other countries, aims to garner 10 per cent share of the Indian premium smartphone market by the end of this year.
BSE-listed Optiemus had signed a licensing deal with BlackBerry last year which includes rights for India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. Blackberry has a similar partnership with Chinese smartphone maker TCL for some other markets.
